melbourne fashion week: akira

so. we’ve seen some noise similar to this, though it was styled differently, from akira, back in the day at the brisbane fashion festival.

it’s interesting to see it here again (possibly with some new pieces, and definitely with new combos) at mfw, because although i have thoroughly tired of the same five models working the catwalk, i actually do, for once here, like this presentation better than the previous one.

in its earlier incarnation, though we have here some very wedding-inclined pieces, the girls had messy bouffants, rather than the loose, sexy, rolled-out of bed curls we’re getting now, and many of the dresses without the shawl-like tops and jackets pulled over them.

for a collection based largely around the romantic, the idea that these chicks can barely struggle to get themselves together after a night of, ahem, not sleeping, works a lot better than the whole “i don’t quite know how to make my hair look grown up, but my mom said i’ve maxed out my prom allowance & i’m doing the best i can” we were getting before.

and bonus points for the not quite fitting over pieces, probably borrowed from the dude she spent the night with, in order to answer his door. we know that’s all about the “is that your fucking bitch ex? i’ll handle this once and for all!” it’s nice. and the white dresses tell us she did score the guy in the end, so we can all go home happy.
